Winchester's own Sonic Honey performed on the Griffin Terrace in the afternoon. Sonic Honey is a trio with 30+ years collective music experience, playing their very own original music to complete an enjoyable Saturday afternoon.
Winchester Community Music School celebrated Broadway with seasoned professionals and beginners joining in to sign Broadway tunes on the back lawn of the School.
Over 40 musicians and dancers performed across 22 sites all over Winchester. From Cuban dance, classical, rock, bluegrass to a 10-piece accordion ensemble, the day was packed with diverse sounds and sights.
To celebrate Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage Month, Yazhi Guo and ShinDaiko performed in an evening of Chinese and Japanese music. Master Guo, widely known as the best Suona player in Asia, performed both jazz as well as traditional music while ShinDaiko, with its powerful taiko drums, opened the event. This event was sponsored by the Network of Social Justice, Chinese American Network of Winchester, the Winchester School of Chinese Culture, Winchester Cultural Council and Winchester Cultural District.
Jazz pianist Jonathan Fagan and Medford's Poet Laureate Terry E. Carter shared their collaborative "Ally Project" as part of WCMS's 40th anniversary faculty concert series. Carter's powerful words, together with Fagan's arrangements and improvised accompaniments, provided an emotional lens through which to process the themes of racial justice, cultural heritage, and family that Carter poignantly emphasizes throughout his work. They were joined by guest artists Greg Toro on bass and John Dalton on drums. Live streamed from the newly renovated Ripley Chapel at First Congregational Church, the 8 superstar musicians of Rumbarroco entertained the crowd in celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month. Rumbarroco focuses on intercultural fusion between musical traditions, including early European music of the Renaissance and Baroque and its confluence with African, Amerindian and Latin-American genres.
